Gilman High School in about 1910. The school was on the site of today's Wadsworth Park. Girls entered through the left door, boys through the right. The school was later enlarged, but the entrances remained separate. Note the tall chimney on the Union Church at left. The church was badly damaged by fire in 1912 and the chimney was removed in the renovation.
  • Graves-store-summit-rd
Graves and Kitteidge's Store on Summit Road in about 1915. The "year rounders" grocery store continued to operate into the 1980s, and is now apartments.
  • Herricks-stable
Herrick's Livery in about 1910. This building was originally a school on Summit Road (replaced by Gilman High School). Mr. Herrick moved it to Main Street where it continued as a blacksmith shop, livery, taxi stand, automobile garage, and filling station known as Branscom's Garage. In the 1980s the building was bought and taken down by "Buddy" Brown after a gas leak frightened the populace. The single story addition of Brown's hardware is on the site.
  • Main-street-1917
Looking down Main Street sometime around 1917. Automobiles were permitted in 1914 after the state legislature over-rode a vote of the townspeople to prohibit them.
  • NEH-panorama
A panoramic view of Northeast Harbor from a rooftop on Harborside, taken ebfore 1910. The body of water in the center is Frazer's Cove, filled in in the 1950s to create the marina. The village is at right, and an enlargement shows the Gaynor Hotel at the head of Sea Street; in burned on May 11, 1910.
  • Obers-mkt-1939
Ober's Store in the winter of 1939. Ernest (Scrubby) Ober's Market was on the right side of the store, the electrical shop was on the left. I.E. Ralph ran a reakl estate office in the small building. The car was Scrubby's.
  • Red-cross-house
The Red Cross House after 1927 when it was brand new. This photo is taken from in front of Gilman High School and the car at right is Carl Kelley's 1931 Reo. He was proud of it and kept it in his picture.
  • Rockend-hotel
The Rock End Hotel in about 1900. South Shore Road meanders in front of the hotel (it is now called South Shore Drive). The hotel was substantially enlarged before it finally burned, but this shows it in its original configuration as Fred Savage designed it for his brother, Herman.
  • Smallidge-farm
The original Smallidge home on Smallidge Point. This pre-Civil War house was razed in the late 19th or early 20th century when the Smallidge farms were sold off for summer homes. The site of this home is now occupied by the Wheat property.
